The History of Wedding Invitations – 18th Century to Present Day

Why do we have wedding invitations? What is the history of wedding invitations? Wedding stationery is now a must have part of every wedding – the colours available are unimaginable, the designs, styles, techniques and shapes are that of a stationery marvel. However it hasn’t always been that way. We decided to do a little research of our own to find out how wedding invitations, and therefore our little company, have come about. We also thought we’d let you in on how we started Ivy Ellen Wedding Invitations and how we’ve grown since.

So the history of wedding invitations all started at the turn of the 18th century when reading and writing was a sign of eductaion. Therefore only the elite could actually use this form of correspondance and send invitations. Usually a monk, who had the skills of calligraphy, would hand write each elaborate and luxury invitation for the family. The invite was often closed with a wax seal of the family crest – another sign of status. Before this, in the middle ages, a town crier would simply announce the wedding in the square and whoever was in ear shot was essentailly invited to the celebrations. Unless of course you had been shunned by the family – oh the despair!

By 1447 Johann Gutenberg of Mainz, Germany, craftsman and inventor, created letterpress printing. He invented the moveable type and by combining it with exisiting technologies he was able to compete with the handwritten invites created by Monks. His method of printing from lead moveable type, a novel letterpress, and oil based inks allowed for the first time the mass production of books. Letterpress printing is done by inking type, or an engraving, and pressing that form into paper with the use of a letterpress.

Traditionally, there would always be a layer of tissue paper in with the letterpressed invite as the ink would not always dry quickly and may run/smudge. This invite and tissue paper layer would then be placed inside a pristine envelope and then inside another larger one. The larger envelope would have instructions for the courier as to how to deliver it and would keep the main invite clean and dry. Each wedding invitation was delivered by hand, often by servants. At this stage the outer envelope was thrown away and the recipients’ butler would deliver the pristine invitation to the family on a silver tray.

Today we have the lovely Izabella from The Blossom Company here with us to discuss wedding flower displays. I met Izabella whilst blogging at The National Wedding Show back in February. I of course fell in LOVE with the stunning floral arch on display! So much so that I felt the need to share it with all you wonderful brides and grooms. So I conducted a quick interview about The Blossom Company, and here are the results…

floral arch - wedding flower displays

What is your favourite piece that you have created for a wedding?

That would definitely have to be the Marie Antoinette floral arch, it is just such an extreme statement piece to have for your wedding day, and it is very unique. I believe it’s really beautiful and adds that extra glamour to the big day.

The floral arch starts from around £500 to hire however this can vary if you are ordering a larger or smaller package deal. You can also ask for different colour or varieties of flower to match your wedding day theme/look.

RLW: Emma & Graham’s Stunning Winter Wonderland Wedding

April 6th, 2017 by Ivy Ellen Tags: , , ,

On the 11th December 2016 Emma & Graham tied the knot in a stunning winter wonderland wedding. Their very special day was held at The Manor House Hotel in Castle Combe, a beautiful location for such a momentous occasion. The bride and groom may have planned their winter wonderland wedding in just three months, but it was defintely worth it! Today we have Emma with us to chat about their big day and offer some tips too…

Who proposed? How did they propose?

I feel I might of taken the whole proposal thing away from Graham. I know he was going to do something and was waiting for the right moment to pop the question. Our relationship has never been a traditional one, very early on after meeting we went on an incredible ‘honeymoon’ type holiday to South America, soon after that our beautiful daughter arrived and then buying our dream home together. So it wasn’t unusual that we often talked about getting married it just seemed like the natural thing to do, question was when? I knew I wanted our venue as it was already very special to us so I rang to see when they had availability in the summer 2017 but of course a beautiful venue like that gets booked up years in advance! However chatting to the lovely Emma the wedding coordinator it came to light there was a special last minute seasonal offer, I immediately reserved it called Graham and said want to get married in three months? Next thing I know we’re  planning our wedding! Three weeks before the wedding Graham surprised me by whisking me away for a night to a very exclusive hotel just down the road from where we lived, he had arranged everything from a gorgeous suite to a pamper treatment for me. There were flowers waiting in our suite together with champagne he cracked open the bottle took me onto the balcony and got down on one knee and proposed. This close to the wedding he still had to do it all the traditional way! And that’s one of the reasons why I love him! Read the rest of this entry »

All my efforts to perfect my recipes was only the beginning. Every cake is a canvas that I can express my creativity and individuality. My favourite ingredients are a combination of a perfect colour pallette and finishing it off with just the right accessories.”

“Choose from our unique selection of wedding cakes and our cake flavour menu to create your perfect wedding cake. Alternatively, we can create a personalised design just for you.”

So without further ado here are a few tips and answers from Nisha about her wonderful wedding cakes…
